Colins take on the build up so far
First team Assistant Manager Colin Nation, took a few moments to reflect on how the build up to the season has gone so far.
Our first four preseason games have given us very different tests for the squad to face. Starting off against a very strong Torquay side I felt we held our own for large parts of the game. It was the first time the lads had played a match since April and there were lots of positives to take from the performance Against Ivybridge we were faced with a defensively organised team who were hard to break down but Owen found the net twice with two great goals. More impressively for me was that our keeper did not have a shot to save in this game which was a reflection on the work rate put in by the outfield players Against a young Exeter City side we played a team who played a type of football that we will never face in our league.
Possession for them was the key and it took our lads a while to adapt to this and take the game to them. City have some very impressive players but again our work rate and fitness was too much for them and ended with us being comfortably in control.
Our trip to Axminster and their fabulous new facility was next. Again we faced an organised defensive team who were good on the break. A change in formation allowed us to be more attacking and give us more scoring opportunities. There were lots of things starting to come through which we have been working on in training. We also looked very sharp in front of goal Overall it’s been a very positive four games with the new players fitting in really well.
The things we are working on have been transferred to matches and we looked well balanced. We have picked up a few minor injuries on the way but nothing to be concerned about. Obviously James is going to be missing for a while and it is doubtful he will be ready for the first league game. We still have young jimmy to come back from his trip overseas and we are still hopeful of tying down at least one more player this week I would just like to thank the supporters who have been able to come and watch so far.
Its been great to see you all after the summer break. Looking forward to seeing you all on Tuesday night where we play Barnstaple at ladysmead. I am sure they will be looking to test us as much as they can so your support and voices will be needed by the team
