Frome Town 0-1 Tiverton Town Monday 28th August 2017
Nearly every successful football team follows the old adage of make your home ground a fortress and win your home games then pick up what you can on your travels as a bonus. Tiverton fresh from an excellent two nil win over Gosport Borough at Ladysmead on Saturday made the seventy-six-mile trip to Somerset on a very hot Bank Holiday Monday. Tiverton’s last visit to The Robins’ home of Badgers Hill twenty-one years ago saw a 2-1 away win with Kevin Smith hitting two goals in front of a crowd of 114 people. This time Tiverton won the match courtesy of Captain Jamie Price’s 11th minute header from a gorgeous Nick Hurst Free Kick in front of 258 people. The exquisite header from Jamie Price looped over the home keeper Kyle Phillips head and dropped inside the far post to the delight of the away fans.
Martyn Rogers now has four excellent strikers at the club and this time it was Owen Howe who partnered Levi Landricombe up front with Jordan Rogers taking his place on the bench with Saturdays scorer Tom Bath. The early exchanges saw a Michael Landricombe header whistle just inches wide of Phillips goal frame. Frome Town then had their own chances with Marcus Mapstone going close and then a golden opportunity when Sam Teale had a free header from a corner but just like Gosport Borough at Ladysmead the Frome Town player sent his header wide of Martin Rice’s goal. With Tiverton’s find of the season Callum Hall playing as a left wing back and the impressive Nick Hurst as the right-wing back Tiverton were always a threat going forward. From a gorgeous Nick Hurst, free kick in the 11th minute Jamie Price rose like a salmon to loop a header over Phillips and register his second goal of the bank holiday weekend.
Frome had another opportunity in the 18th minute as Kris Miller danced down the line and pulled the ball back across the Tivvy box however there were no Frome players in attendance and the chance was snuffed out. Tivvy then had an excellent chance when Callum Hall burst forward and set up Levi Landricombe but the chance was put agonisingly past the post by Tivvy’s number 10. It will be only a matter of time before Levi Landricombe opens up his Southern Premier League account. There were a few half chances for tivvy and Frome were huffing and puffing with no end product. Frome’s manager wasn’t happy with their defending and after one outburst in the first half they tried to tighten up. Frome however were pleased that Mr Halford bought the game to a halt and the half ended with his team being only 1-0 down.
The second half saw Tiverton’s defence excellently marshalled again by Jamie Price who reads the game so effectively along with Tom Gardner and Ben Mammola snub out any serious chances from Frome Town. Although in the 49th Minute a Jon Davies shot hit the outside of the goal frame however Martin Rice had it covered. Frome were pushing more and more players forward and were looking to hit the long ball which played straight into the hands of Tivvy Town’s defence. Tivvy were lively on the break and a Jamie Short run similar to his run against Gosport nearly produced the second Tivvy goal on 60 minutes but he just failed to convert. The 79th minute saw Callum Hall burst forward beating various players on his way and he found himself in the Robbins penalty area and only an excellent stop by Phillips kept the ex-Plymouth Argyle player off the scoresheet.
Tiverton continued to defend with maturity and unlike the match at Hereford where a debateable decision went against them this was never likely to happen again. The nearest Frome Town came was in the 92nd minute when the impressive Jon Davies had a low shot through a crowded penalty area however Martin Rice got down well to make sure that Tiverton Town kept a second clean sheet in a row and stretched their unbeaten run to three games. Next Saturday the team head to Banbury in the FA Cup and with the defence in fine form and quality in attack we look forward to an interesting game.
