Tiverton Town 0 AFC Totton 1

Tiverton Town’s season ended with a 1-0 loss at home to AFC Totton as they finished in 16th place in the Southern League Division One South & West.

Tivvy carved out the best chance of the game and hit the post but came away empty handed after Nathaniel Sherbourne’s late strike gave Totton victory.

Tiverton boss Martyn Rogers made three changes from the side that lost to Evesham Town, with Jake Wannell, Matt Bye and Alex Faux replacing George Rogers, Jimmy Hinds and Dan Western respectively.

The visitors lined up in a 4-4-2 formation that struggled to keep possession.

Pre-match, Tivvy captain James Richards was presented with the fans’ player of the year award but his influence on the game was muted as he was booked early on for dissent.

With neither side able to keep the ball well and an end-of-season feeling prevalent, the first real chance of the game came in the 14th minute, when Tony Lee’s half-volley bounced across goal and past the post.

The visitors’ best chance of the half came 15 minutes later, when Jake Burgess’ 20-yard shot deflected off Hussein Heidari and into the path of Jack Hoey, who ran through on goal and rolled his shot past Chris Wright but wide of the goal.

Wannell’s deep cross into the box was then flicked on by Tony Lee to Owen Howe at the back post but Tivvy’s top scorer was unable to make a good connection on his close range shot and it bounced off the legs of visiting goalkeeper Steve Mowthorpe.

The final chance of the half came when Bye’s corner found Gardner, who leapt well, but his header went just over.

Howe then missed a gilt-edged opportunity to put his side ahead 15 minutes into the second half when Phillips broke down the left side of the penalty area before pulling the ball back well to Howe, who, with the goal gaping and in acres of space, hit the bar from 10 yards out.

Fifteen minutes later, Mowthorpe then denied a Howe drive from the edge of the box before, from the resulting corner, the same Tivvy player saw his flick cleared off the line from Jamie Blackburn.

The winning goal came in the 80th minute, when Blackburn’s low cross into the box was turned in from close-range by Sherbourne, yet there was controversy in the build-up as Lee was down on the floor after a heavy tackle from Jake Rawkins.

With moments remaining on the clock, Richards’ stunning 30-yard free-kick was turned round the post by Mowthorpe and, even with goalkeeper Wright going up for the resultant corner, Tivvy were unable to force an equaliser, meaning their season ended with a positive performance, if another defeat.

Tiverton Town starting XI: Wright, Wannell, Faux (Rogers 72), Bye (Seymour 74), Goss (Hinds 49), Gardner, Lee, Richards, Howe, Phillips, Heidari

Attendance: 263
