Tiverton Town 2-0 Gosport Borough Saturday 26th August 2017

Two years and 4 days from his last appearance for Tiverton Town Chris Wright deputised in goal for Tivvy in place of the regular custodian Martin Rice who was away for one match only. They say that lightening doesn’t strike twice but Chris Wright’s last match his 150th for Tivvy on 22 August 2015 saw him keep a clean sheet in a 2-0 home win against Marlow and in his 151st appearance for Tiverton he kept another clean sheet in a 2-0 home win this time against Gosport Borough.

Tiverton went into the match looking to build on their opening day success at home against Bishop’s Stortford two weeks earlier and they sprung a surprise by leaving Owen Howe on the bench and pairing Jordan Rogers who missed the previous Saturdays match against Chesham with Levi Landricombe as the two front players. Gosport Borough without a point all season came out of the blocks playing neat one touch football on an excellent looking playing surface. Borough had the first real opportunity when a free header fell to Chinedu Vine in the 5th minute but the header from the pacey frontman went wide of Wright’s goal.  On ten minutes Borough had another opportunity and this time Wright got down well to save from a good strike from outside the box due to another lively Gosport attacking move.

Levi Landricombe getting back to his best from injury tested Matthew Cafer with a low drive that the Weymouth born stopper previously with Yeovil Town Youth and Bath City dealt with very efficiently. Tivvy were getting a stronghold on the game and in the 25th minute a lovely through ball from Jamie Short found Levi Landricombe one on one with the keeper and again Cafer did exceptionally well to block Tivvy’s number ten from opening his account for the season. Gosport were not going to lie down and another free header this time for Borough’s number 4 Ed Sanders failed to trouble Wright when he was well placed to score. Apart from a few untidy fouls and a booking for Tiverton’s Callum Hall the first half petered out without any further major action to note.

The second half saw Tiverton revitalised and knowing that the first goal would be crucial came out from the dressing room with purpose. However, on 46 minutes a defensive error saw Borough nearly take the lead. The ball found its way from a loose defensive pass to Chinedu Vine but he screwed the shot wide when well placed. Tiverton didn’t heed the warning and it took another fine save low down from Wright five minutes later to deny a good attacking move from Borough’s lively right winger. Tivvy then started to turn the screw and with the midfield battle being won by Mike Landricombe, Jamie Short and Ollie Knowles they started to create chances. First a towering header from Jamie Price was chalked off for being offside much to the displeasure of the home crowd.  Then it was Jamie Short’s turn to narrowly fail to score when he rounded the keeper but ran out of pitch just when the fans thought the net was going to bulge.

Borough were still looking dangerous though on the break and on 70 minutes it took a fine goal line clearance from substitute Scott Rogers to keep the scores level. With Owen Howe joining Scott Rogers on the field Tivvy were looking more and more a threat.  Then ten minutes later a stroke of genius saw Martyn Rogers make a final substitution. Those who followed football in the eighties would know Liverpool’s Super Sub David Fairclough and Tivvy have their own Super Sub in Tom Bath. Tom came off the bench and in an instance, he had set up Jamie Price with a lovely cross to drill the ball past Matthew Cafer. Two minutes later latching onto the ball from a bad mix up at the back for Gosport Bathy coolly finished to make the score safe for Tivvy. Despite Borough desperately searching for a way back in the last eight minutes the score would stay the same and the Tivvy fans could look forward to their bank holiday match away at Frome Town.
